Tips and Tricks: GATE exams

The GATE exam is your gateway to Masters Degrees and Public Sector jobs in the fields of science and technology. Many students stop studying after B.Tech/B.E yet there are still many, many more that continue. As enrollments in GATE cross the 10 Lac mark, you need to study smart to make your mark. Here are some tips!

The first key step is making sure you chose the correct subject. From a total of 22 subjects only 1 can be chosen for the GATE exam so keep in mind:

"    The subject is suitable for the course you have in mind
"    The subject is of your interest and capability

Subjects available are:

  •  Aerospace Engineering
  •  Agricultural Engineering

The exam has 65 questions and 100 maximum marks. All papers have a common General Aptitude section. Questions are objective-type with Multiple Choice Questions and Numerical Answer questions. Negative marking is given on incorrect Multiple Choice Questions not on Numerical Answer questions.

TIPS

  •     Study thoroughly from the official syllabus, questions can come from anywhere
  •     Understand the structure and type of questions in the exam
  •     Make a study plan keeping time for topics you enjoy, do not enjoy and those that are scoring. Having a variety of topics to study in one day helps increase concentration.
  •     Attempt sample exam papers and previous exam papers to notice trends and increase speed.
  •     Practice calculations on a calculator to increase your speed during exam (calculators are allowed during exams)
  •     Pay extra attention to questions you answer incorrectly
  •     Focus on key concepts
  •     Make small notes for important topics you are likely to forget
  •     Solve questions from different books
  •     Keep a list of formulae to revise from
  •     Practice chapter based self-tests to improve your weak areas
  •     Answer carefully to avoid negative marking; if you are not confident about a question skip it
  •     Revise at least twice
  •     Prepare for the General Aptitude section thoroughly as it is simple and highly scoring
  •     Practice online sample papers to get used to computer-based exam format
  •     Use the last 15 days before the exam for rapid-fire question answers (answering questions to increase your speed

Most importantly, stay cool, calm and confident!
